Steven Stein-Grainger made his Broadway
debut in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award winning production of
Sunset Boulevard. During his extended run he was proud to play the
role of Max von Mayerling in over one hundred performances, starring
opposite Glenn Close, Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige. That engagement
closely followed his eighteen month appearance in the Toronto production of
Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera directed by Harold Prince.
There, he won acclaim for his portrayal of operatic tenor Ubaldo Piangi.
Following his success on Broadway in Sunset, Mr. Stein-Grainger
joined the U.S. National Tour of Phantom where he reprised the role
of Piangi in some of the finest theaters all across the country. |

Mr.
Stein-Grainger has distinguished himself as a very versatile performer; he
has found himself equally at home in the demanding repertoire of bel canto
opera as he has on the concert stage and in the realm of American Musical
Theatre and concertizing has become a major part of his professional life.
His
operatic performances have earned him the reputation of being an “acting
singer” in roles running the gamut from the seriously dramatic to the comic.
He has enjoyed critical success in such diverse roles as Ramiro in La
Cenerentola, Goro in Madama Butterfly, The Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Rinnuccio in
Gianni Schicchi, and Ferrando in Cosi fan Tutte
combining the theatrical and musical aspects of performance into an engaging
operatic experience. Orff’s Carmina Burana, Händel’s Messiah,
Beethoven’s Symphony Nr. 9, and Rossini’s Stabat
Mater have become mainstays of his professional work as well as musicals
in concert combining the classical and musical theatre repertoires
seamlessly.
